Everything you always wanted to know about bracken (but were too afraid to ask)!

Come and learn about how bracken can become a resource on your farm or in your garden.

This event will cover:

  • Why bracken is a fantastic resource, and what it can be used for.
  • Why bracken can be a problem plant, and what management strategies can be used to control it.
  • Different uses of bracken, for example as an animal bedding, a garden mulch and in compost.
  • How to harvest bracken, including hazards, safety and avoiding spores.

Our host will be Dyfed Permaculture Trust, who have been using bracken productively for years. We will see first-hand how they manage and use bracken on the farm, with plenty of time for questions and discussion.

This event is part of CARE's Heath & Hedgerow project, which aims to realise ecological and monetary value, and mitigate climate change, through managing organic material (natural biodegradable matter or 'biomass') and "waste" products.

This project has received funding through the Welsh Government Rural Communities - Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.

CARE are a Community Benefit Society determined to make a positive environmental impact for our local community in North-East Pembrokeshire.

After 13 years hard work we've successfully put up a 700kW wind turbine to generate clean energy. We are now working on developing a share offer to invite people to invest and become members of CARE, which will help grow a fund for the benefit of the local community. We are also working hard to deliver our other community projects, focusing on landscape restoration, creating an eco-friendly space for arts in the community, and offering energy efficiency advice.

Over the years we've worked with other communities, businesses and individuals across North Pembrokeshire; sharing what we have learned along the way, to help build resilience to the changing economy and the changing environment, through community action and enterprise.
