Coaching Society Expert Seminar: 'Coaching and Mentoring as a Key Leadership Development Tool'. Dr Nigel Spencer, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

Nigel stood as a keynote speaker at our conference in November 2019 and he is back by popular demand to examine coaching and mentoring initiatives in further detail. By using examples and observation from his career in the legal and professional services sector, Nigel will explore how coaching and mentoring initiatives have worked at the different stages of the career pathway. He will look at how these initiatives provide leadership opportunities and even more value for firms and their clients. He will also review less well-examined issues such as the design and structure of learning programmes. Based on the fantastic feedback received on Nigel’s keynote, this seminar is one not to be missed! 

Nigel’s career has spanned both academia and the City, and he has held senior roles in both sectors, focusing for the last 15 years on leadership development and coaching for senior executives. Nigel began his career in academia, gaining a BA and PhD from London University, and subsequently held postdoctoral research roles at Reading University and Oxford University.  During this time, Nigel’s research focused on themes including hierarchy, power, group dynamics, and cultural change and he led cross-disciplinary, international research projects in the UK and overseas.

 Nigel worked in Professional Services Firms for 20 years, initially in a client-facing role at PricewaterhouseCoopers and, from 2004-2017, as Global Director of Learning and Development in two international law firms.  Currently, Nigel is a Senior Client Director in the Executive Education team of Oxford University’s Saïd Business School, working with clients to create leadership development and coaching programmes.

An accredited executive coach since 2009, Nigel’s coaching expertise is in leadership development and Nigel has helped businesses to develop best practice in coaching and mentoring, in particular:

  • delivering a number of award-winning leadership curricula with coaching embedded into them for senior executives;
  • creating innovative mentoring and reverse mentoring programmes to build confidence and competence in more junior professionals;
  • setting up internal coaching faculties, coach training programmes for business leaders to take up internal coaching roles, and establishing best practice coaching supervision and CPD communities.

More broadly, Nigel co-chaired the UK’s national body of Legal Education professionals (the Legal Education Training Group) for a number of years, working with international Business Schools to conduct research into coaching, leadership development, and strategy. Nigel also held Board roles at Higher Education Research Institutes and at the ACCA, and is a Visiting (Industry) Professor at the School of Law, Queen Mary University of London.

We are the Wales Academy for Professional Practice and Applied Research (formally WIWBL) at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. We run a dynamic provision led by an experienced team who deliver a range of high quality, innovative bilingual learning opportunities for a diverse body of learners across the public, third and private sectors.

Our activities include offering BA and MA pathways in Professional Practice & Coaching and Mentoring as well as shorter and non accredited opportunities. We also accredit in house training programmes and run the Coaching Society which hosts bi-monthly coaching seminars and an annual conference.
