Bruce giving a tour of his beautiful forest garden!

Activity Outline

This session will be run by local forest gardener and woodsman Bruce Slark, in partnership with the Growing Better Connections Project. Bruce will take us on a tour of his beautiful forest garden. During the tour, Bruce will share his 'top tips' for effective forest garden creation and discuss how to effectively design forest gardens in different settings. Whilst exploring the garden, Bruce will highlight best management practices and recommend edible species, which thrive in a West Wales climate. During the day there will be opportunities to learn about forest garden maintenance, through ‘action learning’, or in other words, by lending a hand!

Practical activities include processing the impressive chestnut harvest, using Bruce’s ingenious equipment. Mulching around newly planted trees, and digging up self-sown saplings, using Bruce’s specialist spade and bill hooks. At the end of the session, you will be given the option to take some of Bruce’s chestnuts home with you. To either plant in your own garden or roast on an open fire.

This event is for you, if you’re interested to learn about forest gardening, would like to see which species thrive in our climate, want to learn about forest garden maintenance, or are intrigued to see first-hand the yields you can expect from an established site.

CARE are a Community Benefit Society determined to make a positive environmental impact for our local community in North-East Pembrokeshire.

After 13 years hard work we've successfully put up a 700kW wind turbine to generate clean energy. We are now working on developing a share offer to invite people to invest and become members of CARE, which will help grow a fund for the benefit of the local community. We are also working hard to deliver our other community projects, focusing on landscape restoration, creating an eco-friendly space for arts in the community, and offering energy efficiency advice.

Over the years we've worked with other communities, businesses and individuals across North Pembrokeshire; sharing what we have learned along the way, to help build resilience to the changing economy and the changing environment, through community action and enterprise.
